I work at Rasputin's on Telegraph. Two days ago, an SF Chronicle reporter interviewed a workmate of mine about the coming (Jan. 1, 2014) Berkeley ban on smoking. I can't back up this info because it came from the reporter via my friend but:
UC Campus and dorms will ban cigarettes, e-cigs, cigars, pipes, even chewing tobacco. If you get caught, the fine is $1,500. Yes, you read that right.
City of Berkeley will ban everything but chewing tobacco AND will hire a "special task force" to roam both commercial and RESIDENTIAL areas looking for people smoking on the street. I heard that these task force people will be able to knock on the doors of single family dwellings to see if any smoking is going on inside private homes but that CANNOT be right! 4th Amendment, Bill of Rights. Read it.
Smoking will be banned in all commercial areas, apartment buildings, etc. In other words, no smoking anywhere in Berkeley including cars within the city limits. Fine is $1,500 if you're caught smoking.
This means that smoke shops will probably go out of business.
I don't know when the Chronicle article will appear.
Does anyone have any REAL info on this? Nothing on City of Berkeley website but old news.
